And the great prophet, Steve Jobs, took the silicon stones from the east and fashioned them into slates of metal and glass and gave them to the people, who marveled at their brilliant light. "Look!" the prophet exclaimed, "No longer must you carry a phone and a music player for now two are one and you may be unburdend by your ancient devices!". 20: But the prophet did not understand what he had given the world. And so Illex, not yet a traitor, took the tablet like the others and was amazed for every time he looked at it, the glass looked different. And though he did not feel anything when he touched it, the glass moved under his finger. "This is good." illex thought to himself, "Think of all the things I can do with this magic glass, hallowed are the Gods of the east and hallowed is the prophet!".
But his maiden was not happy, for she believed that Illex had been taken in by the colors of the slate and though she showered him with love an affection he did pay her any heed. "Why does that thing fascinate you so?" she cried! Illex, dumbfounded responded in kind "Just look at it! Do you not marvel at it's wonder? Imagine all the things it can do, all the things it will do! it will change the world!" But they were both saddened for one did not understand the other while both of them were right, and soon too, the maiden would fall to the galmour of the glass.
Many years passed and the maiden and Illex grew apart. No longer together, Illex wandered the landscape with his magic glass, alone, like all the others. 23: And though he had the ever present tablet to keep him company, he was distracted. The poor man Illex could not focus for every time he looked at his slate he thought he heard his name. Frustrated again, Illex looked up but could not find who had called him for there was no one idle, nobody was looking at him only their slates. And so aggrivated, Illex left where he was and traveled to a new place to be undistrubed by his tormentor.
More years passed and dispite his best efforts Illex could not escape the voice calling his name. A demon of the land he thought for no matter where he was, it would eventually find him. Finally he said to himself, "I am cursed! Why am I tormented so!" 25: And though the man Illex did not believe in the demon, the demon was real. It would scream at him during the day when Illex was unfocused. The mighty demon would splinter his mind with shards of glass when he was not thinking and grind stones in his ears when he was not listening. Day after day the demon would persue Illex unrelenting, unwaivering and though he was strong of will he could not outlast the demon for it never tired.
After many years of battling the demon, Illex could fight no more. "Enough!" he yelled into the void of his mind, for he dared not disturb the others pondering the brilliance of the glass. "What is it you want of me! Why do you torment me so?". 27: "Do you not remember the sound of my voice?" The demon responded. "Who are you!" Illex demanded. "I am your friend, I have always been with you and not always did you know me as your tormentor, for I was not born a demon."
Curiously the man asked, "If you are not a demon than what are you?". "I am your mind, the part of your mind you do not know. I am the one who answers the questions you ask, and finds the way when you are lost." Confused Illex said, "I do not recognize you." The mind responeded kindly "I have been locked away with nothing to feel, nothing to smell, nothing to taste. I see no people and travel nowhere, I am dying, for I am trapped in a prison of glass. If would you please let me go, I will torment you no more."
Amazed and saddend the lonely man thought for a moment and then asked the voice "But what do I do without the glass? it shows me where to go, and answers the questions that I have. I need it." 30: And the mind answered, "You do not need the glass, I will do these things for you as I have always done and always will. I will do them whenever you wish, all you must do is ask and I will do as you wish."
"But what about the others?" Illex asked, "They will know that I have forsaken the Gods of the east and the prophets of the west." "They will not know." His mind answered. "For their minds too, are locked in cages and they can see no people and go nowhere."
And so Illex put down the marvelous tablet and was branded the Heretic.
